Somnium Space Festival Spotlight #3: EZK!MO on Experimental DnB, Virtual Stages, and Festival Freestyles Ahead

As the Somnium Space Festival approaches, we will sit down with some of the incredible artists lighting up the virtual stage. In this third installment we have a conversation with EZK!MO, the Dutch DnB maestro who’s been tearing up VR scenes with his high-energy mixes and creative flair. From his graffiti-fueled start behind the decks to building immersive worlds in Unity and discovering the wild freedom of virtual performances, EZK!MO brings a fresh, experimental edge to drum and bass. We sat down with him to dive into his origins, his love for gaming and world-building, what sets Somnium Space apart, and the hidden gems he’s prepping for the festival. Here’s EZK!MO in his own words.

Somnium Times: Talk to us a bit about your origins. How did you first get hooked on DJing, and what was it about drum and bass that grabbed you?

EZK!MO: A friend of me started out dj-ing. He practiced in a local venue every thursday and i always joined in to sketch some graffiti. We had the whole venue for ourselves and sometimes we could use the main soundsystem. Very cool. Thats how i started out dj-ing. Just for fun actually.

Somnium Times: I’ve read you’re into gaming and building worlds in VR engines. What’s the story there, and how did that passion lead you into the VR music scene?

EZK!MO: Yea, I’m very passionate when it comes to gaming. I really like to digg out everything a game has to offer in its own engine. I Spend countless hours making maps for cs and farcry for example. When I stumbled across VRchat I instantly knew what to do; Build venues and DJ in them. The perfect 3-in-1 package for me. Building, gaming and dj-ing. So I kinda speedran Unity for a couple of months to get the skills needed for an attractive world.

Somnium Times: Performing in VR is a whole different beast of course with that insane immersion. How has it changed the way you connect with crowds compared to real-world gigs? What’s the coolest part of virtual stages for you?

EZK!MO: Virtual stages can be anything really, thats so cool about it. Sometimes you perform in a huge sick venue, and sometimes in a toilet room. The contrast is huge, just like the styles of music being played in VR. Most DJ’s in VR are more creative or experimental with their sets. Everyone that does music really likes to express themselves, but I feel like that will to be ”unique” is stronger in VR. Also the crowds are soooo different to the crowds I have IRL. People can hear your set clearly trough their headphones, so they automatically focus more on it.

Somnium Times: How did Somnium Space first pop up on your radar? As a DJ, are there any features or vibes of the platform that click with you?

EZK!MO: My homie Meloz told me about it. He works for Somnium and I get a heads up any time there is an update for Somnium. So far I really like the concept of having a big open world with easy accessible venues. I also love the option to put a tip jar on the floor to earn some bread on the side. You know, dj gear is very expensive most of the time. So this way your home-setup becomes an investment instead of just something you need to dj with.

Somnium Times: We’re pretty stoked you’re spinning the decks at the Somnium Space festival December 27-29. Are you preparing your set in any way for this occasion? Anything special you want the crowd to walk away with after your performance?

EZK!MO: I’m really stoked too! Got myself some new dj gear I want to try out. And when it comes down to planning sets, I usually only do it when i have to play IRL. My VR setup is at home, in my safe place, so that makes it great to freestyle and maybe do something i never did before without stressing out. One specific compliment I get a lot is something like ”Nice set! You played a lot of tunes I never heard of!”. I think that is the vibe I want to reflect to my crowds. A good selection and a lot of hidden gems.

Somnium Times: Last one. Where’s the best spot for people to track you down online if they want to dive deeper into your world?

EZK!MO: You can find my music on Soundcloud under EZKIMO_NL, or my published dj sets on mixcloud under the name of EZK!MO. Go check it out!

Somnium Times: Thank you Ezk!mo for this interview. We can’t wait to see you perform at the Somnium Space Festival!
