Somnium Space has rolled out version 3.1.5, delivering a well-rounded update focused on performance, usability, and accessibility. The latest patch introduces several player-friendly features that refine everyday interactions while making the platform easier to join and enjoy for both veterans and newcomers alike.
Smarter Avatars with Automatic Fallback System
One of the standout additions is the new automatic fallback avatar system. When uploading a custom avatar, the platform now intelligently generates a highly optimized version on the fly, using a single mesh and material under 20k polygons and leveraging Unity 6’s advanced capabilities. This lightweight version dynamically adjusts its detail based on distance from other players, resulting in transitions that are nearly impossible to notice. Your original high-detail avatar remains completely unchanged, but everyone benefits from significantly better performance across crowded areas.
The team has also refreshed the standard/default Somnium avatars. These updated models now better match the current aesthetic of the platform while retaining full body tracking support and introducing subtle dynamic movements. They strike an excellent balance between visual appeal and efficiency.
Base Reality Comes Alive with New Parcel Loading
Base Reality has received a major technical overhaul with a brand-new parcel loading system built around Unity 6 optimizations. Upon entering the world, players now see visible builds spread across the landscape right away. As you approach, these structures smoothly transition into their full detailed versions. The result is a much more lively and populated feel to the central hub.
This intelligent system also ensures smooth performance while using vehicles, preventing any noticeable slowdowns during loading. Overall, exploration in Base Reality now feels far more dynamic and immersive for players on a wide range of hardware setups.
Improved Tablet, Mirror, and Navigation Tools
Several thoughtful interface upgrades make daily life in Somnium more comfortable. The Tablet Follow Mode has been completely reworked to function as a true play-space overlay. It now rotates naturally with your movement, remains stable, and no longer bobs up and down, creating a much more natural experience similar to popular AR overlays. The feature can be toggled on in the Tablet Settings menu.
The Mirror interface has been redesigned from the ground up, becoming cleaner and more intuitive. A new “Remember Position” option lets users save their preferred mirror placement for instant recall. Meanwhile, the Map app now offers increased zoom levels, making it far easier to find friends and interact with locations. Both the in-game Worlds menu and the launcher’s Worlds tab now default to the Popular tab, helping players discover active and exciting experiences faster than ever.
Easier Access and VR Hardware Support
Launching into VR is now more flexible. From the launcher, users can immediately choose between SteamVR, VDXR, or Meta Link, with the ability to switch runtimes later in the settings. Launcher notifications have also been polished for better clarity.
PSVR2 and HTC Vive Focus Vision owners will be particularly pleased as the OpenXR plugin has been updated to version 1.17, resolving previous compatibility problems and allowing these headsets to run Somnium smoothly.
Fresh Website Design and Invite Codes Turned Referral Codes
Somnium’s official website has undergone a full redesign to better showcase the platform’s current direction. The new look feels warmer and more inviting to first-time visitors while accurately reflecting the vibrant platform Somnium has become. The wiki has been restructured with clearer categories: Game Guides are now separate from technical sections covering the SDK, Avatars, Worlds, and a brand-new Economy hub for players interested in trading and commerce.
Account creation has also been simplified. Invite codes are no longer required. New users only need to complete a quick, free age verification via Stripe. Existing invite codes have been converted into referral codes. Both the referrer and new player now earn positive Karma, which contributes to leveling up and unlocking future benefits.
VR1 Takes Flight with X-Plane 12 VR Beta
Also, popular content creator VR Flight Sim Guy recently took the Somnium VR1 headset for a spin in the new X-Plane 12 VR beta. Using full hand tracking, he was able to interact naturally with every cockpit switch and control, while the headset’s dynamic foveated rendering and high-clarity mixed-reality passthrough delivered an incredibly sharp and immersive flight experience. From taxiing a detailed Just Flight Cessna 152 to cruising over scenic UK countryside, the session showcased the VR1’s strong potential for professional-grade flight simulation.
The full video is well worth watching for anyone interested in high-fidelity flight simming in virtual reality.
