Meet Bynni: From PS1 Trance to Virtual Raves in Somnium Space

With roots in the hypnotic trance of early PlayStation games and influences like Paul Oakenfold and Graeme Norgate, Bynni began producing in 2006 and has since built a distinctive sound that fuses Trance and Dubstep with Western and Eastern elements. After formal music theory training at the University of Cambridge and a rapid entry into DJing in 2024, Bynni has performed at Club Neon, Untitled, and other venues.

We sat down with Bynni ahead of the upcoming DJ Night in Somnium Space on May 29, 2026, to talk about the journey into VR, the thrill of performing, and what makes Somnium a great place for live music events.

From bedroom producer to full-body avatar sets, this is the story of an artist bridging real-world beats with virtual worlds.

Somnium Times: What first sparked your interest in music production and DJing? Was there a specific moment, artist, or experience that made you decide to pursue it professionally?

Bynni: I first starting producing sounds in 2006 and producing music in 2010. I was inspired by Paul Oakenfold, Graeme Norgate and other trance music from early PS1 and PS2 games. I took courses for Music Theory at Faculty of Music, Cambridge Univerisity, which aided in my pursuits. I started DJing in 2024 after buying a Hercules DJControl Inpulse 200 at CeX and practicing for 3 weeks and finally debuting at a pop-up of DJ Jigsaw’s, he really liked my performance and it gave me the confidence to DJ more. After that I went to MidPoint to play there, and AdLoud started Unbeatable Music Club, where Jigsaw played, I asked AdLoud if I could play for UMC. Which allowed me to be booked for Club Neon and Untitled.

Somnium Times: Your sound mixes Trance and Dubstep with both Western and Eastern influences. What inspires that fusion?

Bynni: Mostly hearing the fusion in video games and hearing how moods can be changed.

Somnium Times: How did you discover VR in general, and what were your very first VR experience like?

Bynni: I’ve known VR from it depictions in movies like The Matrix and Tron, cartoons and video games. When the Oculus Rift was unveiled it sparked a new revival of VR, I wasn’t able to fully experience VR until 2018, using a Lenovo Explorer I borrowed from Jigsaw, it was an exciting experience and being able to see models in 3D was a cool effect and much less fatiguing experience from the polarised 3D goggles.

It was great to perform in Somnium and seeing the crowd reaction was fun

Somnium Times: When and how did you first hear about Somnium Space? What made you want to start DJing there specifically?

Bynni: I heard it from Rocket and invited me to join him when he was DJing, I spoke to Meloz about DJing in Somnium.

Somnium Times: You’ve DJed in Somnium Space before. Can you tell us a bit what your first set was like, and how did the crowd and the world itself feel compared to other VR platforms?

Bynni: It was great to perform in Somnium and seeing the crowd reaction was fun, Somnium while early in it’s features to other platforms, feels similar enough to get adjusted.

Catch Bynni live at the DJ Night in Somnium Space on May 29, 2026, where the beats will drop and the avatars will move. The epic DJs Emerald and Ezk!mo will join the ranks and infuse the crowd with even more energy.

Somnium Times: In your opinion, what are the best features of Somnium Space that make it such a great place for raves and live music events?

Bynni: Having a global chat to let everyone know where people are at, show support and bring the community together.

Bynni receiving live tips while performing

Somnium Times: How does performing live in VR (especially in Somnium Space) feel different from traditional DJing or even streaming sets? Does the virtual environment change how you build energy with the audience?

Bynni: I haven’t DJed in a real life booking yet, but as for having the VR Hardware equipped with full body, it can get very sweaty. I feel like it adds character to be DJing with VR and listeners can see my avatar moving and see my hands moving as I guide my controller.

Somnium Times: For beginners who want to start DJing in VR worlds, what practical advice would you give them? From gear to mindset to getting their first gig?

Bynni: For DJing in VR; there’s a lot of things know. If you’re DJing without the headset and perform on your controller like normal with your avatar at the stage. For with VR you’ll need a way to see your controller, either with no face blocker for Quest Pro or the Open Facial Interface for Quest 3 as such. For a controller they can go with the DDJ-FLX2 or DDJ-DLX 10 for 4 channel, they can also seek out a Traktor Kontrol S2 or S3. I would learn about Music Theory to help with key grouping and splitting music apart to each individual instruments. I would also get at least 64GBs of RAM to load peoples avatars. For getting booked recording a performance and uploading it to YouTube or MixCloud and sending it to booking staff can help. Just ask them if they’re looking for DJ’s. Playing at open decks is a great way to show a smaller community how you play.

Somnium Times: Looking ahead to your upcoming performance in Somnium Space, what are you most excited about for this event?

Bynni: Meeting everyone in Somnium. And performing again.

Somnium Times: Finally, if people want to dive deeper into your world, where can they go?

Bynni: They can go to my Linktree: https://linktr.ee/bynni

As Bynni prepares to take the virtual stage once again, the journey reminds us how music continues to evolve, blending nostalgia, technology, and community across both physical and digital realms.
