As the Somnium Space Festival approaches, we will sit down with some of the incredible artists lighting up the virtual stage. Today we’re joined by Project Wub, the master of heavy, wub-loaded bass and immersive electronic drops. We caught up with him for an exclusive chat about the origins of Project Wub, his journey into VR performance, what sets Somnium Space apart, and what he’s cooking up for this epic three-day festival. Somnium Times: What’s the origin story behind Project Wub? How did you first dive into music, and what pulled you deep into those heavy, wub-loaded genres like dubstep and electronic bass?
Project Wub: I never really came up with an origin story for project wub, its more of an abbreviation or like a joke inside the music community. I came up with the name originally because I love music genres like base house and hood trap and was trying to make music at the time and needed a name for myself, so while watching video on how to do something in FL studio the person in the video said wub while referring the base sound that they where showing how to make and I guess that I loved that so much that I just took it to heart and came up with project wub. The way that I first got into music was the way that one of my friends was making music and the way that they can capture their emotions and things just had me held in a trance while watching them write a song and since then I just wanted to make music as an expressive outlet. As for the way that I got into dubstep and riddim was that I have always been a bass head, have loved it since the day I can remember and the way I think that I found it was I was listening to NCS on youtube and one of the songs just sounded different to the rest in a good way so I decided to look up the dubstep genre and I have just stuck with it ever since. As for getting into the DJ scene, I went to a club night in 2023 for new years at furavenous and since going to that I loved the DJ scene and wanted to be apart of, so I taught myself how to DJ and have been climbing the ranks ever since
Somnium Times: Take us into your VR journey. What’s your experience been like in the virtual space, and what’s your go-to technical setup for throwing down those sets?
Project Wub: I think the best way to describe the experience not just in the social, game or club scenes, but as VR in a whole is that it is an escape from reality even if it may be for an hour or two. My personal experience has been life changing, I have met some amazing people playing VR games and some of them have become like brothers to me because of it, I met my wife on VRChat who quite literally got me through some of the hardest years of my life so far, and to end this without VR I would have never found, or become a DJ. As for my setup for doing these DJ sets I have the latest, and best pc from AMD that you can get, Quest Pro, FBT and for the decks I use a Nurmark Platinum Pro FX, the reason why I have such maxed out gear is because I believe that because my DJ sets are of high quality so should my gear, cant be dropping out mid set.
Somnium Times: VR cranks music up to a full multi-sensory level. As a DJ, how do you see it revolutionizing the game, especially with the wild visuals and that unique way it brings people together that IRL events can’t touch?
Project Wub: I find that in the places that VR clubs thrive over IRL is in the way that the DJ/VJ/world dev can tie the music, lights and the all round atmosphere into the vibe of the club, I have seen this first hand at my own club Unified Minds, we bring jaw dropping worlds, banger beats and killer light shows all into one place, all while being free to join in. This brings me to my next point, VR clubs in general are just better that IRL because unlike IRL clubs you don’t have to travel anywhere to get to the club and have a good time, its just as simple as putting a headset on and joining the vibes. And my final point is that it lets the devs for the events express themselves a lot more than IRL, that don’t have the same limitations of money or land that they have to confine their creativity to unlike VR where they have free roam, it also allows the attendees of the event express who they are, letting them do so in a way that IRL may be possible, whether that have a trans avatar or being a furry they can express the way the truly feel.
Somnium Times: How did Somnium Space first cross your path, and how hyped are you to be hitting the lineup for this epic 3-day festival?
Project Wub: Somnium space first arrived to me in the form of doom scrolling on TikTok and coming across a live stream, I stopped by to see whether it was a VRChat world or something but found what I think could be the best VR app out there. As for being part of this up coming line up it is an honor to be a part of, I’m extremely hyped to be able to show this amazing community what project wub can do, how they can make you feel, and bring back the wubs from 2016. WUB WUB!
