Somnium Space Festival Spotlight #4: RocketVR’s Evolution from Second Life to Somnium Space Stages

As the Somnium Space Festival ignites from December 27-29, 2025, we’re bringing you exclusive conversations with the visionary artists powering this unforgettable VR celebration. Next up is Adam, better known as RocketVR, the UK-based DJ, innovator, and CEO of MidPointVR who’s been blending high-octane drum & bass, house, neurofunk, and unexpected mashups since his early teens. From his roots in Second Life and the wild early days of VRChat, to co-founding iconic clubs like Club 808 and Venue LIT during the COVID era, RocketVR has helped shape the virtual rave scene.

We caught up with him to explore his genre-fusing origins, groundbreaking tech for remote B2B performances, why Somnium Space stands out among VR platforms, and the festive energy he’s bringing to the festival stage. Here’s RocketVR, straight from the decks!

Somnium Times: Kick things off for us and tell us a bit about yourself, how you first got into music, and how your background has shaped that genre-blending style you’re known for?

RocketVR: I’m Adam, a 28-year-old residing in the UK. My academic background is in Cyber Security & Digital Forensics with Networking, which definitely influences the technical way I approach the “backend” of virtual performances.

I got into music very young, listening to an endless list of artists like Linkin Park, Pendulum, David Guetta, Eminem, Sean Paul, Fort Minor, 50 Cent, Timbaland, DJ Fresh, and High Contrast. I was drawn to anything with a great instrumental or powerful vocals. By the time I hit secondary school, I was deep into the Drum & Bass, Drumstep, and Dubstep eras. Seeing how a simple remix or bootleg could give an entirely different atmosphere and energy to an original track is what really sparked my interest in how music can be transformed.

Somnium Times: Real-time mixing is such an art form in your sets. How did you hone those skills, and what part has VR played in letting you experiment and push boundaries?

RocketVR: I started on a Numark Party Mix, experimenting with blends and doubles of songs you’d never guess would pair together. I still carry that “expect the unexpected” philosophy today with my Traktor S4, X1, and XDJ-700 setup.

Long before I ever put on a VR headset, I was DJing in Second Life. In 2017, I moved into VRChat using an Oculus Rift CV1. Back then, the platform was a “wild west” there were no club worlds or consistent events. I would find a group of “mirror dwellers” in a public world so I could see everyone around me and DJ using my DJ Controller, Virtual DJ Software & VoiceMeeter through my microphone. We eventually grew enough to start organising our own events with other DJs like Jigsaw and streaming on Twitch.

Somnium Times: You’ve rocked stages across different platforms, mostly in VRChat, and you’re also the CEO of MidPointVR. Tell us a bit about that.

RocketVR: I’ve been hosting events since the early days of VRChat. I co-founded Club 808 in 2020 during the COVID era, providing a second home to artists like Muzz & Protostar when they were unable to tour or get paid. Shortly after, I co-founded Venue LIT (VR) in 2021, which was the most active and first Quest-compatible clubbing experience at the time. That project fundamentally drove my interest in event organizing and DJing.

Now, as the sole founder of MidPoint, I’m looking at the evolution of the rave experience. MidPoint started as a proof-of-concept for B2B DJing. I figured out a way to intercept signals from a DJ controller and route them to a cloud machine so two or more DJs can perform on the same software at the same time but in real-time. You see the same tracklist, waveforms, and can even manipulate each other’s EQs and FX with low latency. This tech isn’t limited to DJs; it incorporates remote lighting and visuals (VJing) and live bands, allowing a full production team to tour the world from the comfort of their homes.

Somnium Times: You’ve delivered some unforgettable sets in Somnium Space. What sets it apart for you as a platform?

RocketVR: I’ve explored almost every Social VR platform: High-Fidelity, Sansar, Wave, AltSpace, ChilloutVR, NeosVR, Resonite, SineSpace, Banter, and LavenderVR. I was searching for the foundations of a great creator economy like Second Life but with amazing VR support. Somnium Space fits the glove. Seeing the development and updates there gets me really excited. I had a blast at Electric Eve last year celebrating Christmas with all of you. The platform empowers innovation by allowing us to create high-fidelity, persistent environments that make the performance feel “real.”

Somnium Times: We’re excited to see you back for the Somnium Space Festival (Dec 27-29). How do you prep for a big set like this?

RocketVR: I’m a “gut feeling” DJ. I hardly ever use setlists. I believe a DJ’s main job is to be an entertainer, so I cater to who is actually in the room. I’ll be tailoring the vibe for Day 3 of the festival with a festive flair and those signature RocketVR mashups, but the direction of the set will be decided by the venue, the DJs performing before me, and the energy of the attendees. I want every set to feel personal and unique to that specific moment.

Somnium Times: Have you got your Tip Jar ready? What’s your take on fans being able to tip you directly inside VR?

RocketVR: The Tip Jar is ready and tested! Any donation is massively appreciated and goes directly toward funding my future goals and equipment like the dreaded and expensive XDJ-AZ! Direct tipping is pure appreciation flowing straight from the fan to the artist, which is exactly how it should be.

Somnium Times: Finally, where’s the best place for people to keep up with you online?

RocketVR: You can follow my upcoming shows and the progress of MidPoint here:

Somnium Times: Thank you Adam for this interview! We can’t wait for your set during the festival!
