Artur Sychov, founder and CEO of Somnium Space, recently announced a new development, which includes player badge achievements: “Now you will be able to see if someone is a World / Parcel or Avatar owner, SDK user or on the leaderboard for Racing, Shooter Games, etc.”

With this new “Player Badge Achievements” update we are one step closer to a Karma and social system. How exactly this system will be implemented for Somnium Space is yet to be seen, but when implemented it will be akin to reputation. One can imagine factors like “time spent in the game”, “assets owned”, “number of friends”, “vouched for by other players”, etc. will give you Karma or in other words a (trust) rank, which in turn may unlock benefits, Somnium Cubes, participation in events, and more.
We will not speculate too much on the precise structure and methodology until we get some more information, but the Karma system is ultimately a way to favor certain behaviors. In this instance it is paramount that Somnium Space remains the open, fair, playing field it is today. Everyone should feel welcome and be able to participate, socialize, and do business. Provided they adhere to some overall guidelines, wrapped in a gamified Karma system.

This type of social credit initiative requires a set of clear guidelines that businesses and individuals alike can be evaluated by for “reputation.” Supporters of these systems agree that this will help regulate and improve social behaviors as well as promotes traditional moral values for secure societal interactions.
Especially in this newly established decentralized field of blockchain, crypto-currencies and virtual assests, you want to be able to trust that the other party will follow through with honest transparency. And when operating in a new metaverse society we must live by our agreed upon system of rules.
Note that there is nothing that prohibits a social credit system to be under the wings of a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) eventually. This would make perfect sense and be an important move. But until then it will be at Somnium Space’s discretion to launch the initial system.
The five pillars of any moral system include: autonomy, justice, beneficence, non-maleficence, and fidelity. Even though we project ourselves deeper and deeper into the digital and virtual realm, the pillars still apply. Also in Somnium Space.
Karma in Sanskrit, roughly translates to ‘action”. In life you are what you do not what you say you’ll do. There is no one system that would be able to control the way a people should behave of course. We all live by a standard on our own accord and actions but in a free decentralized world there has to be a way to minimize the negative outcomes of one off scenarios because there are those who utilize the system and those who “use” the system.
