In the Beginning Was Mind: Celebrating Somnium Space and the Community

Written by Marc Demar

Roaming VR world Somnium Space is an experience that never fails to ignite my curiosity and fascination. As I traverse the digital landscapes of this virtual realm, I am constantly enthralled by the myriad creations that surround me. What captivates me most is the profound journey from abstract concept to concrete reality that takes place here. Somewhere, in the intangible recesses of minds, seeds of inspiration germinate. Mental constructs, wisps of thought, that are meticulously nurtured and transformed into tangible, virtual experiences.

One might wonder, what makes this process so remarkable? After all, the birth of ideas and their realization is a daily occurrence in our physical world. Consider this article, for instance – it emerged from my initial idea to explore this very subject, and here you are, reading the result. But the fascination lies in the profound implications of this creative process. It’s a testament to the intrinsic connection between human creativity and the formation of the world as we know it.

The significance of this creative journey becomes even more profound when we reflect on its foundational role in shaping our reality. Without ideas, imagination, meticulous planning, and the blueprint for execution, the world would stand still. In essence, everything that exists is a product of these ethereal notions solidifying into the tangible. It’s something we often take for granted in our day-to-day lives, and yet, when we pause to contemplate it, it reveals itself as a profound and transformative force.

Moreover, delving into the fundamental questions of existence, we encounter the age-old debate of mind versus matter. If matter preceded the mind, then ideas, thoughts, and information would emerge from the physical realm, rather than shaping it. This notion, while intriguing, raises a cascade of contemplative quandaries. What we perceive as original ideas could potentially be traced back to the complex interplay of atoms and the immutable laws of physics. And even then, these laws themselves are not an explanation but a description of the natural world, leaving the ‘why’ of existence still shrouded in mystery.

However, let us not digress into the profound philosophical abyss of existence. Intuitively we understand that in our world, mind precedes the tangible, and we acknowledge and applaud the endeavors of creators, including those of the vibrant Somnium Space community. Through the synthesis of their creativity, innovation, and shared vision, they have succeeded in crafting a digital realm that transcends boundaries and captivates the imagination. In the present moment and throughout the years gone by, their combined efforts have birthed a captivating world that continues to captivate and inspire.

While exploring Somnium Space, I witness a tangible display of human creativity, observing the expressions of Artur (Sychov, founder and CEO of Somnium Space), Artific, Blake Hotz, Isaac Gindi, Ultralord, Wooferblast, Denevraut, Oly, and many more reflected in their digital creations. This experience grants me the opportunity of gaining insight into their personalities and values, through the artistic works they produce.

That’s a privilege.
