Somnium Space, the open, persistent social VR world will launch its highly anticipated update on February 20, 2020. Prior to this a relative small, but dedicated community of early backers and VR enthusiasts has been granted early access and assisted Somnium Space in fine-tuning the experience of not only venturing into Somnium Space in VR, but also to build and upload structures via their builder tool.
Up to this point many had been using the builder to create structures on their parcels, but those were not visible to other users. That all changed early February, 2020 and the result has been nothing less than mind blowing.
Almost instantly Somnium Space came alive with a multitude of structures including but not limited to homes, galleries and museums. People had been building away in prior months and were simply waiting for Artur Sychov, CEO and founder of Somnium Space, to give everyone the green light and start uploading.

The Metaverse
Somnium Space is an open, social, persistent and blockchain enabled VR world. There are a couple of things that make this world unique in our view.
First, the developers have a clear vision of what they want Somnium Space to be: A single, social, persistent VR world that can give you a second to none immersive experience. This vision shines through in their eye for detail, which is phenomenal. Take simulation of real-world physics for example. From golden hour shortly after sunrise or before sunset to the movement of the clouds in the sky, from reflections in glass windows to crawling shadows on the ground, the team has done a tremendous job in making your brain believe you are in a real place.
Second, in-world assets such as parcels of land have been tokenized – they’re ERC721 NFT tokens on the Ethereum blockchain – and can be purchased, owned and traded separate from the Somnium Space platform. This is a fundamental feature; the segregation of platform and the (ownership of) in-world assets that Somnium Space makes available and that people may create themselves (such as avatars and homes). But perhaps most impressive, Somnium Space is a world where memories are created. Yes, it’s virtual, but real nonetheless. If you just came back from a hike in the mountains in Somnium Space and you witnessed the setting sun with some friends, you can’t help but return to those moments. Again and again.
