Dreaming Big in Somnium Space

Leonardo da Vinci once said: “For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.” I thought of these words when I was on Lonely Diver Mountain the other day, my favorite spot for contemplation and relaxation in Somnium Space.

There is no proof that da Vinci actually wrote or said those words, but let’s ignore that and not let the truth come in the way of this article. One can see it as an aviation quote, but to me it captures the essence of dreaming. Of dreaming big.

Somnium Space is in and of itself a dream come true. Artur Sychov, founder and CEO of this VR world, is a man who dared to dream big. Looking up to the sky he knew where he wanted to be. It was not an option for him to only walk the earth.

I feel that many citizens of Somnium have inherited this ‘dreaming big’ DNA, which is so ingrained in the fabric of Somnium Space. There is a pioneering spirit among those who roam Somnium, an awareness that we’re tasting flight and like da Vinci said (or not) we turn our eyes skywards. That’s where we want to be.

Dreaming big is a state of mind. It isn’t necessarily about one set goal and it’s not measured in how much you are capable of changing the world around you. Dreaming big is first and foremost a platform for your own growth. Instead of always seeing obstacles and limitations, a dreamer sees opportunities and possibilities. Adults could learn from children in this respect. They always dream big. It’s part of their genetic fiber. I have yet to meet a child that thinks small because they aren’t hindered by the all the things that hold adults back. Ask a child what they want for their birthday present and they might say ‘I want a rocket so I can fly to the moon!’

This childlike amusement and wonder is something I see in many Somnium residents. A pioneering spirit, a wish to create something entirely new that the world has never seen before. People may say we’re silly or that our dreams are unrealistic. Just because something goes against the grain, it doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. History is full of people who went against the grain or in opposite direction of the social norm. And thank god for that, it’s why I am writing this article in the first place.

In fact, any person who has achieved a wild result has envisioned it prior to that. Not very different from the child who wanted a rocket for a birthday present.

And when I say wild result, I do not mean in absolute terms. One of the wild results could be that you find new friends, which would be the most powerful and beautiful validation of Somnium Space in my view. Perhaps you find inspiration and learn a new skill. If so, Somnium has already changed your life.

Our dreams come in different shapes and sizes. But what we have in common is that we all dream. We dream big. This is what makes us Somnium residents. This is what connects us.
